How to register a death

Having been notified of the death of an investor we will need to see a copy of the Death certificate to register against the account(s).

If the estate of the deceased is below £5,000, by completing a statutory declaration and signing section A we are able to carry out the requests of the executor or beneficiaries.

If the estate of the deceased is between £5,000 and £10,000 we are also able to carry out the requests of the executor or beneficiaries, however the statutory declaration must be completed in the presence of a solicitor, Commissioner for Oaths or a Justice of the Peace and Section B must be signed.

If the estate of the deceased is above £10,000 then a Grant of Representation must be obtained from the Probate Service. The Probate Service forms part of the Family Division of the High Court. It deals with ‘non-contentious’ probate business and issues grants of representation, either:

  • Probate (when the deceased person left a valid will and an executor is acting)
  • Letters of administration with will (when a person has left a valid will but no executor is acting)
    or
  • Letters of administration (usually when there is no valid will).

These grants appoint people known as personal representatives to administer the deceased person’s estate.

When the relevant Grant of Representation has been obtained this is registered to the account and the requests of the executor or beneficiaries can be carried out.
