What is a building society roll number?
A building society roll number is a reference code used to identify a member’s account through a combination of numbers and sometimes letters.
Today, many building societies use a personal account number as your unique roll number to use when paying into a savings or mortgage account.
When do you need a roll number?
Roll numbers are important when making a payment into a building society account. The building society will provide you with your roll number when your savings account has been opened, and this must be used as the reference of the payment you are making. This is to make sure your payment goes to your account.
Roll numbers are used as well as a sort code and an account number when making payments to your account. If you are using a building society roll number as the reference for your payment, you must not add anything else in the reference field.
What does a building society roll number look like?
Roll numbers usually contain a combination of numbers and sometimes letters that are unique to your account. At the Tipton, we provide you with an eight-digit roll number, known as your personal account number, once your savings account has been opened.
How do I find my building society roll number?
Here at the Tipton, you can find your personal account number, on the inside cover of your passbook.
If you open your account through our Tipton App, you should find your personal account number on the App, under your account name and on your welcome letter you will receive once you have opened your account.
If you need assistance finding your personal account number, simply contact us on 0121 577 2551, complete our contact us form, or visit us in branch and our team will be happy to help.
Is a roll number the same as an account number?
Your roll number is not the same as the account number. Your roll number is used in the reference field when making online payments, to ensure your payment reaches the right account. When making a payment to your Tipton savings account online, you will need the below details:
- Sort code: 20-27-33
- Account number: 70885096
- Reference (your roll number), that can be found in your passbook or on the Tipton App
- Payee name: Your full name
